KAUDOM & CAPRIVI EXPERIENCE 2024!
A “travel-expedition” in Namibia from the 14 to the 29 of October that will wind through the less travelled places of the Kalahari, with the crossing of the last wild park of Namibia (Kaudom) and the meeting with the large rivers of Caprivi: the Okawango and the Kwando. The encounter with the Bushman culture and with that of the Mbunza people, on the border between Namibia and Angola, will make you live an unforgettable experience. Finally, there will be a visit to the Waterberg Plateau Park, which remained practically unexplored until the beginning of the last century. The use of 4×4 off-road vehicles fully equipped for camping with a tent that can be raised on the roof and the camps that we will set up together in the midst of nature (wild camp) will allow us to savor the essence of the true African expeditions. You will drive your own off-road vehicle and the team will consist of a minimum of 4 to a maximum of 10 participants so that everybody will be able to enjoy this fantastic adventure. Gianluca Massalini will be the Guide who will lead you in this unique experience.
In the thirteen days that we will spend together in Namibia, after the first night close to the capital Windhoek (Okahandja) and having supplied the off-road vehicles with food and additional equipment, we will head north to the Bushmenland and then into the Kalahari in an easterly direction, soon leaving the asphalt for travel less and less travelled tracks, discovering villages that have seen very few tourists passing by.
We will approach the border with Botswana and, north of Tsumkwe, a unique experience awaits for us: we will go to plant our camp in the bush at the Bushmen village of //Xa/oba (Living Museum) where the local community of the Bushmen !Kung will welcome and bring us into the heart of their customs and traditions. We will live with them for several hours, during which we will be able to learn how to light the fire with sticks, to assemble the arrows for bow hunting, to create jewelry with pieces of ostrich eggs.… We will also attend their traditional dances and, if we are lucky, at the dance in which the ‘village doctor’ (medicine man) enters into trance to get in touch with the ancestors and treat his own people.
From here we will reach, in a northerly direction, the Kaudom National Park, with its demanding sandy tracks and its wild animals. We will spend the night in the two campsites of the park, both not fenced: it can happen that during the night elephants, hyenas or cats can cross our camp… inside our tents we won’t run any danger.
After our safaris in the park, we will reach the Caprivi through the terrible sandy track that leads to Katere in a northerly direction. Then the tar road that we will travel heading east along the Caprivi strip will take us to Divundu, where we will be able to find fuel for our vehicles and to stock up on water and basic supplies. We will meet the majestic Okawango River (the only river in the world that flows into an internal delta, thus forming the famous Okawango Delta) and we will spend the next two nights along its right bank in a proper campsite, with water, toilet and showers. Here, protected, we can also swim in the river. On the morning after sunrise we will go on a safari to the wild Buffalo National Park, located along the Okawango River and bordering Botswana, where we will look for elephants and, of course, buffaloes. Coming back to the camp in the afternoon will allow us to relax and recover some strength!
Again we will continue along the Caprivi Strip on a tar road heading east, to meet another large African river: the Kwando, which once entered Botswana takes the names Linyanti and then Chobe, before jumping into the Zambezi just before the Victoria Falls. Following the right bank of the river we will enter Bwabwata National Park, so that we can explore this exciting park. We’ll camp for two nights in a beautiful riverside campsite.
Afterwards, after a last safari in the park at dawn, we will travel again along the Caprivi Strip, but towards the west. Indeed, we will begin the return journey by going back to Divundu, where we will refuel, and then we will reach the Rundu area. Here we will spend the night in an equipped campsite along the banks of the Okawango River, observing the watu (or mokoro, the wooden canoes) that reach Angola on the opposite bank. In the afternoon we will visit the local village of Mbunza, a tribe belonging to the Kawango ethnic group, which will provide us with an in-depth overview of their traditional culture.
The next morning we will start the return journey towards Windhoek in a southerly direction, stopping to visit the Waterberg Plateau National Park, where we will camp: in this way we will be able to discover the wealth of fauna present in the park plateau, which remained practically unexplored until the end of the 1800s!
Finally, we will reach again Okahandja, where we will spend the night in a pension/hotel and the next day Windhoek: here, after delivering the off-road vehicles, we will say goodbye at the International Airport for the return flight.
